While I did enjoy the season it doesn't hold a candle to the others. A lot of the references were cheap and the, "Time is a flat circle" thrown in so lazily at the end killed it. It had a lot of potential but yeah, super weak.

I've wanted to watch True Detective since it came out, but I've found it hard to get into. I've seen s1e1 at least three times, but none of the rest. I haven't heard any mention of the series in years - I don't follow "MSM" entertainment news. But I'll definitely take another look at it now. Thanks Richard!

the 11th hour decision to incorporate True Detective elements into what was a stand-alone miniseries was ham-fisted and added nothing of value aside from branding/marketing. The true consequence of this decision was elevating audience expectations to a level which few shows can achieve.

Ignoring HBO's decision to graft TD onto someone else's vision, I found the show to be lackluster and ultimately disappointing. What started out with an interesting premise and tremendous promise limped along through it's own convoluted plot tunnels to a finale where the audience, writer and actors were seemingly checked out — particularly with regard to Jodi Foster's final scenes, which fell flat compared to her strong performance in the initial episodes. The unreliability characters' recollections of key events was interesting but didn't really provide any value in terms of character-building or storytelling. And the material vs. supernatural uncertainty felt forced.

Just a bummer of a season, not because it was all bad, but because I expected so much more. Parts were certainly interesting and entertaining but as a whole, it was disappointing.

If people are interested in a female-led crime miniseries (which appears to be a major goal of this season of TD), I recommend Mare of Easttown. While lacking many of the hallmarks of TD, it is an incredible, character-driven show with excellent writing and acting.

I haven't seen the last ep yet, so won't read the article yet. But I like this season very much. Back to season 1 vibes. Even though I also loved s2 after the shock, that's it wasn't like s1 style

this is excellent. I don’t know if I’ve been angrier about a show failing. It’s not about S1. I wanted them to have a good run out. Loved the first episode. It was the gaslighting, the treating of storytelling like emotional whack a mole. I just wish that we could — as a collective— acknowledge that this is television but not good television (on any level). Like it’s just bad. And it is deeply problematic (if you start pulling on the mental health thread). Women deserve better than being represented by this dross.

I could rant for days. Oh, and s3 is massively underrated so ❤️

After a season full of "writing above the audience" we were treated to the lamest finale in television.

Season 1 is rightfully lauded as the best singular season of television, but man, season 3 is slept on.
