This week confirms that Overwatch is in dire straits with team owners being offered millions to walk away from the league. Who could have seen it coming?
So many great lines in this piece, but this one buckled me:
“A special shoutout to Sean Campbell VP of Reach3 insights who wrote a guest article saying that the Overwatch league was proof that esports markerting works. His only other article on the site? One speaking about the promise of Google Stadia. Finger on the pulse.”
Absolute banger Richard. Esports was by the nerds, for the nerds and will always be for nerds. Whether or not the money remains, the 30 year old with a toddler will still be just as happy playing dust2 on 1.6
Great article Richard - how does Nate Nanzer escape your oversight? How about a part 2 that shows how he, knowing from day 1 that the league he was selling was worthless, jumped ship at the “peak”
So tired of seeing the grasping-at-straws social pressure to make everyone in the world feel remorse for people losing their jobs with shitty companies and/or in shitty industries
I have had jobs for shitty companies, and guess what? I don't work for them anymore and look back on those jobs with mostly regret, though one can find value in seeing the inner workings of these places full of mindless supplicants who make you say to yourself "Oh, THAT'S how the banality of evil works"
Can anyone just suck it up and stop lying to themselves about their value/skillsets? What's unique here is how these people who work adjacent to video game development and cry on social media all have white collar pomposity but without the white collar compensation, especially in esports
I'm happy this finally happened and we can all bask in Richard's catharsis, FINALLY
Excellent article, and let’s be thankful that Valve isn’t like Riot or Blizzard they fully know that CS came out of a garage made by a few players for everyone, they fully know it wasn’t their idea or otherwise, well, they would maybe treat it like Riot does their games. In any way, Valve could’ve been like Riot or Blizzard a long time ago despite not originally drawing up the game, they chose not to be like that and recently decided to abolish the franchised leagues by 2025 as well. Thank you Valve and fuck you Bobby Kottick, you came and you ruined one of my favorite companies. The first shitty thing he did was introducing unasked for “achievements” into WoW by the next addon, fuck you Bobby, and fuck you to everyone who supported him.
This article is mega, that wiki callout was hilarious.

Great stuff Rich! You make better OW content than Blizzard

Great piece Richard. Always appreciate the content.
I wonder what Robert Kraft’s “favorite” Overwatch hero is...
Rest In Piss, OWL
I've been following all of your work throughout the entirety of this league's existence and it feels good to finally see it end.
Great article
